The Civil Police classified the case as animal cruelty and opened an inquiry on 16 January 2026, with oversight from the Public Prosecutor's Office.

Police reviewed more than 1,000 hours of security footage and spoke to over 20 witnesses. They concluded that one teenager was directly responsible for the attack and asked for that teenager to be held in temporary detention.
Three adults, who are family members of the suspects, were charged with trying to influence witnesses, including hiding evidence. The investigation into a second dog, Caramelo, who survived an attempted drowning, remained open.
Because the legal process runs under youth-protection law, the names and ages of the teenagers involved remain private.
