Honey the hedgehog, Yeadon
Overview
In July 2026 an adult female hedgehog later named Honey was found in a garden in Yeadon, Leeds, covered in thick blue and yellow non-water-based paint. The paint restricted her spines, prevented normal defensive curling and was associated with serious breathing problems. Prickly Pigs Hedgehog Rescue treated her and painstakingly removed paint from individual spines, but Honey later died.
Investigation
21 July 2026 — arrests: West Yorkshire Police said four males, aged 44, 21, 17 and 15, had been arrested on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. All four were released on bail while enquiries continued. 22–23 July — death: Prickly Pigs announced that Honey had died despite treatment. Public reporting available to QUA4U does not establish that any of the four had been charged or convicted; the latest verified status located is arrest, release on bail and an ongoing police investigation.
