Sacramento neighborhood cat — Adrian Cruz animal-cruelty prosecution
Overview
Practical action and follow-up
Local service contacts checked October 18, 2026. These are public reporting and support routes, not confirmed QUA4U partners. The contact check does not establish a new court outcome.
- Report cruelty in unincorporated Sacramento County: contact County Animal Care through 311, or 916-875-4311 when calling from outside its service area. Give the location, time, animal description and factual observations; ask for a report reference and the responsible agency. Confirm jurisdiction for incidents within a city.
- Preserve useful evidence safely: keep original camera footage, timestamps and a separate backup; provide it privately through the investigating agency’s requested channel. Do not confront suspects, trespass, publish witness addresses or organize harassment. The Sacramento SPCA’s reporting guidance directs cruelty investigations to animal-control authorities; the SPCA itself does not investigate these complaints.
- Follow the case through official channels: directly affected victims or witnesses can ask the District Attorney’s office about the next court date at 916-874-6218, and inquire about available victim/witness support at 916-874-5701. Eligibility and services must be confirmed; legal representation, compensation or a particular sentence are not promised.
Accountability: record the agency, reference number, evidence submitted and next follow-up date. Update the case only from verified court or agency information. No transport, veterinary treatment or placement has been arranged by QUA4U.
Status: criminal case pending.
Sacramento County says a neighborhood cat was killed in an April 2026 incident captured on home surveillance. After weeks of investigation, Lead Animal Control Officer Zoe McCurnin and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office developed evidence supporting the June arrest of Adrian Cruz. Cruz was charged with felony animal cruelty. The charge is an allegation unless and until proved in court.
What can actually change
- Track the prosecution and sentencing rather than treating a petition signature as the endpoint.
- Support evidence preservation, animal-control investigative capacity and lawful requests for strong animal-possession restrictions if a conviction occurs.
- Document the work of investigators and community camera witnesses as a model for other cruelty cases.
QUA4U classification: verified arrest/charge; prosecution pending.
