In 2020 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service issued a final rule removing gray-wolf entities in the lower 48 states and Mexico from the federal endangered and threatened list, except for the separately listed Mexican wolf. That 2020 rule was later vacated by a federal court in 2022.
